Customer Background

The customer is a meat and livestock distributor based in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, currently planning to construct a new slaughterhouse designed to process 800 cattle and 300 sheep per day. They are seeking a complete water supply system, including project design, construction, technical support, and after-sales maintenance. To ensure the reliability and stability of the entire facility, the customer was looking for a trustworthy supplier capable of providing full technical and service support — and that's why they chose AMANDA&UMEK.

Customer Requirements

The water quality must meet slaughterhouse industry standards, with specific limits on microbial content, turbidity, TDS, pH, and hardness, suitable for general industrial water use in meat processing applications.

The customer required two complete water treatment systems — one for operation and one as backup. When the main system is in backwash mode or under maintenance, the standby system should be able to switch over immediately to ensure uninterrupted water supply and stable production.

The system is also equipped with a 300 m³ storage tank, providing water reserve capacity for unexpected situations such as power outages or pumping delays, ensuring continuous factory operation.

The required outlet pressure is 5–7 bar, with a flow rate of 40 m³/h per set, totaling over 80 m³/h when both systems are running.

AMANDA&UMEK’s Solution

To design a precise solution, we requested the customer’s detailed raw water quality report, summarized as follows:

  • Water source: Borehole (non-municipal water)

  • pH: 6.8–7.2 (neutral)

  • TDS: ~450 mg/L

  • Hardness: ~150 mg/L (as CaCO₃)

  • Turbidity: Moderate, seasonal variation

  • Heavy metals or hazardous substances: None detected

Based on the analysis, the customer’s raw water quality is generally good, with the main concerns being turbidity and microbial contamination. After thorough communication, AMANDA&UMEK’s technical team customized the following system design to meet both the customer’s operational needs and budget.

Water Supply System

Submersible Pump

A submersible pump draws raw water from the borehole into the raw water tank. The pump selected is CNP SJ30-22, made of SUS316 stainless steel, capable of reliable long-term operation under well conditions.

Raw Water Tank

200 m³ modular stainless steel tank is constructed by on-site welding after material delivery. It stores raw water in advance, preventing production interruptions caused by unstable well water supply. The SUS304 stainless steel construction ensures corrosion resistance and prevents contamination of the raw water.

The tank is equipped with a level gauge with analog signal transmission for automatic water level control, preventing overflow or shortage, and enabling real-time monitoring of water levels.

The drain outlet and valve are DN100, PN1.0 with EPDM lining and 304 stainless-steel disc, ensuring excellent sealing and corrosion resistance during drainage.
All connecting pipelines are made of UPVC, offering lightweight construction, easy installation, and high corrosion resistance.

Raw Water Pumping System

Two CNP CDMF42-2 pumps (40 m³/h, head 40 m) made of SUS304 stainless steel are used, configured as one duty and one standby. Both pumps can operate simultaneously during backwash to double the flow rate, ensuring stable production even during cleaning cycles.

Quartz Sand Filtration

Two carbon steel filters (φ1800 × 3150 mm) lined with anti-corrosion rubber are installed, each equipped with DN80 electric ball valves and graded quartz sand media. The one-duty-one-standby configuration ensures continuous operation during backwash, maintaining a 40 m³/h treatment capacity per unit.

This design guarantees stable, continuous, and efficient water supply for the slaughterhouse while minimizing equipment investment, installation, and maintenance costs.

Product Water Tank

100 m³ modular stainless steel tank, constructed with the same materials and configuration as the raw water tank, stores filtered water. This enables staggered storage and continuous supply for the slaughterhouse.

Constant Pressure Water Supply System

The system includes two CNP CDMF42-3-2 pumps (40 m³/h, head 45 m, SUS304), operating one duty and one standby, paired with a frequency inverter300 L pressure tank, and pressure transmitter.

This configuration ensures uninterrupted water supply to the slaughterhouse. In case of motor failure, pipe blockage, or other unexpected issues, the standby pump can automatically switch into operation through the control system, ensuring seamless water supply and eliminating single-point failure risks.

The one-inverter-to-two-pumps design allows a single frequency converter to control both pumps, reducing one inverter’s cost and simplifying PLC programming, wiring, and system debugging.

Security Filter

SUS304 stainless steel security filter with three 40-inch PP filter cartridges (5 μm) removes fine suspended particles, protecting downstream equipment. It is equipped with pressure gauges and valves for performance monitoring and maintenance.

UV Sterilization System

1200 W UV sterilizer with a capacity of 40 m³/h is installed on the outlet pipeline after the product water tank.The high-intensity UV light instantly inactivates microorganisms, ensuring the safety of water used in slaughterhouse operations such as carcass washing and organ processing — fully compliant with hygienic standards for direct contact with meat.
