Sterilization Principe
UV radiation has three wavelength regions: UV-A, UV-B and UV-C, and the last region, short-wave UV-C, has disinfecting and germicidal properties.
Low-pressure mercury arc lamps, similar to fluorescent lamps, produce UV radiation in the 254 pressure (nm) range. One nanometer is one billionth of a meter (10^-9 meters).
These lamps contain elemental mercury and an inert gas, such as argon, in the UV transmission tube, usually quartz (which, unlike glass, is transparent to UV light).
Traditionally, most mercury arc UV lamps are of the so-called "low pressure" type because of their relatively low partial pressure of mercury, low total vapor pressure (about 2 mbar), low external temperature (50-100 °C) and low power consumption.
These lamps emit near-monochromatic UV radiation at a wavelength of 254 nm, which is in the optimal range for UV energy absorption by nucleic acids (~240-280 nm); the UV light breaks bonds in the nucleic acids and thus kills microorganisms.
