On April 6, 2024, my colleague and I from Amanda Company embarked on a journey to Lebanon, a small nation in the heart of the Middle East. However, our trip was fraught with uncertainty. As our plane descended into Beirut from Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, unsettling news of Israeli airstrikes on southern Lebanese cities filled the air.
Navigating Lebanon's narrow streets, dimly lit by streetlights, we were confronted with the stark reality of a nation grappling with the aftermath of the devastating port explosion and ongoing regional conflicts. Conversations with local clients revealed a grim economic landscape, marked by negative growth and a plummeting exchange rate, dwindling from 1:1500 to 1:8900. The collapse of the banking system had eroded trust, forcing reliance on cash transactions, with the US dollar emerging as the preferred currency.
Despite Lebanon's modest footprint on the global stage, its water treatment market thrived. From wholesale and retail of water treatment products to intricate engineering projects and popular swimming pool installations, the demand was palpable. Remarkably, Lebanese consumers displayed a nuanced understanding and appreciation for Chinese water treatment solutions, favoring products like Runxin control valves, FRP tanks, and a variety of filter cartridges and reverse osmosis membranes, even in the face of labels bearing the "Made in the USA" tag.
In the face of economic and political adversity, the Lebanese appetite for water treatment solutions remained resilient. For Amanda Company, Lebanon presented a landscape of both challenge and opportunity. We endeavored to forge partnerships, delivering high-quality water treatment solutions to aid Lebanon in overcoming its economic hurdles.
