In March 2024, my colleagues and I embarked on a seven-day exploration and client visits in the water treatment market of Saudi Arabia, starting our journey from Beijing Capital International Airport. Our first destination was Riyadh, the capital of Saudi Arabia, where mornings were refreshing but afternoons were hot and sunny. Our visit coincided with the Ramadan, the Muslim fasting month, during which Saudis abstain from food and water during daylight hours, leading to a quieter atmosphere outdoors and sparse traffic on the roads until after sunset.
Evenings in Saudi Arabia were vibrant, with the city adorned in colorful lights, enhancing its urban appeal. Despite the daytime restrictions, nights in Saudi Arabia were bustling, attributed to the cooler temperatures and the end of fasting allowing for social gatherings and activities. However, traffic congestion was common, even late into the night.
Our client visits were scheduled for the evenings, reflecting the local working culture where businesses operated well into the night during Ramadan. Meetings often lasted for hours, stretching late into the night, leading to a unique business trip experience where daytime was reserved for rest due to the unconventional working hours.
Our journey continued to Jeddah, a port city characterized by vast stretches of desert landscape devoid of vegetation. The architecture, predominantly white with thick walls and small windows, seemed adapted to the harsh Middle Eastern climate and religious beliefs.
In Jeddah, we met with five clients to explore the water treatment market. Saudi Arabia faces severe water scarcity, with desalination accounting for a significant portion of its water supply. Consequently, the market for water treatment products such as desalination systems, reverse osmosis membranes, fiberglass tanks, ion exchange resins, and UV disinfection units is robust. While domestic water treatment systems are less common due to the availability of high-quality desalinated water, there is a strong demand for industrial and commercial water treatment solutions.
