Ion Exchange Resin Description
Ion exchange is a reversible reaction between ions in liquid phase and ions in solid phase
In chemical reaction, when some ions in the liquid phase are preferred by the ion exchange solid, they will be absorbed by the ion exchange solid To maintain the electronegativity of the aqueous solution, the ion exchange solid must release equivalent ions back into the solution.
Acid cation exchange resin is divided into strong acid cation resin and weak acid cation resin.
Strong acid cation resin:
This kind of resin (ionresin) contains a large number of strong acidic groups, such as sulfonic acid-so3h. It is easy to dissociate H + in solution, so it is strong acidic. After the dissociation of the resin, the negative groups in the bulk, such as SO3 -, can adsorb other cations in the solution. These two reactions make H + in the resin exchange with cations in the solution.
After a period of use, the resin should be regenerated, that is, the ion exchange reaction should be carried out in the opposite direction with chemicals to restore the functional groups of the resin to the original state for reuse. For example, the above cation resin is regenerated with strong acid. At this time, the resin releases the adsorbed cation, and then combines with H + to restore the original composition.
Weak acid cation resin:
This kind of resin (ionresin) contains weak acidic groups, such as carboxyl COOH, which can dissociate H + in water and become acidic. After the dissociation of the resin, the remaining negative groups, such as r-coo - (R is a hydrocarbon group), can adsorb and combine with other cations in the solution, resulting in cation exchange. It is difficult to dissociate and exchange ions at low pH. it can only work in alkaline, neutral or slightly acidic solutions (such as pH 5-14).
